Yeah but with a Class D power amp, which is exactly what is wrong with modern SS amps.

The old ones had robust Class A/B Mosfet power amps, that makes the whole difference.

Iirc correctly, ampeg had a patent on the underlying tech and were quite aggressive in defending it even long after they stopped producing it. It lapsed a few years ago, so I'm surprised that it's not come back into play. Granted the kids today will just buy a nano cortex and go straight to FOH along with the e-kit since it'll all be triggers anyway

Interesting, I didn't know that. But it's not only Ampeg. Look at the older Marshall Mosfet, or even Valvestate vs their current MG line. Randall, same deal. The old RGs are monsters. GK had some good ones too. Even the old Peavey Transtube amps were pretty good.
It's a lost art. You'd think these days with the volume concerns from shitty soundguys, SS amps would be better. But they all sound like shit now.

The best exception is the BluGuitar. That's a legit SS amp, although there's a Nano tube in it. But it's SS for the most part. It even uses a Class D power section (I think), but Thomas put considerable work into making it sound legit.

I guess the Katanas are cool too but that's more of a digital product. It does have a great sounding power section though.

Other than that, there's really nothing remotely good.

Fair! It's especially dumb since the schematics for all of those amps aren't exactly hard to find either. There isn't any particular secret sauce to them - they just use big fet power amps and not chip amps or class D. The old Randall RGs are about as simple as it gets. The RG13 floor preamp I had sounded great. It was just a shame it had reliability issues.

The bass boost broke on mine and I play sludge, so that was no good  it was fucking awesome while it worked though. It was a real shame that series had reliability issues as the red channel was pretty much a gainier and modern take on the classic RGs and the blue channel was instant crowbar.

I have, after years searching, finally found for the schematics for the RH1003 and I've been doing a fuck load of smd PCB design for work this last 6 months so I'm kinda tempted to take a punt at a 1u rack pre based on it just to keep my design chops up :hmm: Question is do I go full send and do all three channels?
