On a second thought, the ebony fretboard with the black headstock will look great. Maybe even paint the entire neck black for that old MIJ " contemporary series" look.

Those were cool guitars. I get almost that exact one that comes in often from a customer. Well, a few times a year for setups. But enough that I recognize it. It’s a good guitar for sure! But I also just stripped the neck and will be doing just a few coats of oil and wax. I’ve got that down to perfection for my neck finish. So no paint. Also, not surprised cause it looked kinda thick, even tho it was a satin finish, but damn that fender neck had a lot of finish on it. Curious to see what that might do to the overall feel and tone. Cause it was enough that it had to affect that resonance. Idk.. Won’t be a big change but I’ve done enough to know it can have an effect.

Looks awesome, man. I've always heard that the Blackouts were crap (mainly, because they are far too compressed/saturated, so they sound muddy). The Blackouts single coil could be interesting with the EMG EXG+SPC controls, but I like the pickups I have in my guitars currently. I need a body/neck that I can put some EMG 58s or 60As in (with either an SA or SLV), but I kind of also want to put an EMG HZ H3A in something as well.

Any thoughts on what guitar I should get that either is a partscaster (ie, separate neck+body), or has pickups that need replaced?

Well other people have dumb opinions! Haha.

Altho, I know why they say that, but every pickup has its place. And what is prolly the biggest factor that negatively influences the Blackouts is the output. THATS what generally makes someone feel they are too compressed or muddy etc. Some guitars seem to enhance it even more somehow. And sometimes, the amp when it gets hit with too hot a signal, compresses and gets darker. For example, of my amps, the 5150 combo doesn’t mind it, the 5153 handles em great, but the XXX for some reason can’t handle the power and I can hear it overload the front end a bit. But overall I think the blackouts are voiced really well. They have more low end than the EMGs for sure but not more than most of my passives. And when I go from passive to this guitar, there is no real loss of bass. The blackouts are still a bit tighter and a touch lighter in the lows but I don’t feel any need to change amp settings. Almost with all my EMGs I have to dial the amp for EMGS and dial it different for Passive.

Just so happens in THIS guitar, after thorough testing, these pickups work great. The blackouts don’t always work, but neither do EMGs. Lol. And I’ve found is about equal for each the amount they do for me

That would make sense. The amp and how the pickups/guitar interact would definitely be an issue if the Blackouts deliver too much to the input.
