New Bass Rig - Phase 1
Decided to up my bass game and started the hunt for "better." Since I currently have a Glarry, that left a *VERY* wide market to hunt.
I knew the sound I wanted, and some general idea of how to achieve that sound. Went trawling at a price point and found a surprise.
It's the most hideous orange. Roasted pine with natural finish. Perfectly ugly.
All the plastic is still on it, and it looks relatively untouched aside from some scrapes in the plastic over the pickguard here or there.
Still has the tuner condoms on. Someone around here called them that. Was it Loop?
Consider my bass game officially "bettered."
Waiting for the amp to arrive. Was supposed to be here yesterday, but got delayed in shipping for some reason. So, in the meantime, futzed with old faithful and got that Jazz growl to come through a bit:
So ends what I'm capable of playing on the bass with my fingers at the moment. Futzed with it long enough last night fingers on both hands are on fire this morning.
Messed with it enough to know the truss isn't seized, and everything has plenty of adjustment on it for when I do my setup after it's settled a few days. I'm *PUMPED* to get the amp and hear that growl come to life at real bass rumble volumes.

Can't believe how comfortable it is after all the cheapos I've played over the years.
Do it, man. Only had a few hours with it and I can already tell it's gonna drive me to get better at actually playing bass, rather than just slamming bass under my guitars for vibe. I'm excited to get the recording gear set up again now.
Thanks, man. It's not horrible, but there is an eye-searing quality under the lights in my living room. Maybe it's just the clash against all the gay and white.2tallmusic wrote: ↑Wed Dec 11, 2024 6:49 pm Actually I really dig the optics! Nice score - congrats!
Amp tracking has been stuck in Phoenix since the 7th. Patience dwindling. Come on, man. I wanna annoy neighbors with this thing.

Looks great man. I even like the finish! Has a 70s vibe to it.
We need to buy a 5-string for Kimmi and this one has been on our radar. Good to see a review from someone I actually trust!!

Good choice! I love the difference in tones you can dial in between the two pickups on a J. Pretty sure you'll enjoy it.

Not ugly at all.
My experience: bass is hard. Not as easy as I thought it would be.

Roasty pine natural. It looked much better to me when I took it into one of my rooms that isn't all gray all the time. Much more vintage yellow rather than putrid orange.Guitarbilly wrote: ↑Wed Dec 11, 2024 10:15 pm Looks great man. I even like the finish! Has a 70s vibe to it.
I'd say you can't really go wrong with it. Great tone even through my shittiest guitar amp. Plays like butter now that the neck's settled a bit from it's travels and I could tweak the truss to near flat. And the dude that sold it to me said it was one of the best sounding Jazz Vs he's ever had. I can believe it, and I haven't even heard it through a real bass rig yet.We need to buy a 5-string for Kimmi and this one has been on our radar. Good to see a review from someone I actually trust!!
I've been impressed so far. Neck is nice and fat, bridge has that growl. Balancing them off each other should be great for dialing into a mix. And the tone control is actually hugely useful.banana hammock wrote: ↑Wed Dec 11, 2024 11:26 pm Good choice! I love the difference in tones you can dial in between the two pickups on a J. I've found similar over the years, but usually have really shitty basses. Though I did have a BTB6 that was really nice.. This blows it out of the water playability wise though.
OH SHIT! Amp is OFD! Tonight's gonna be epic!
