So.... I got a Tonex....

Post by Guitarbilly »

I saw it at the local Facebook marketplace. The guy was looking to sell or trade for a 2x12 or 4x12 cab (I guess he's going back to amps ). I had an extra 2x12 cab that was taking up space here so I figured I'd offer it to him since at the very least the Tonex is smaller and easier to sell. He took it.

I've been playing with it the last few days, and I have to say, I got it sounding pretty good. I even found a good Laney GH-50L profile on their user database.
The stock amps that came with it are also pretty decent.

Obviously I'm not going to replace my amps with it, but it might replace my Friedman IR-D pedal as my DI rig since it's smaller and has all the effects I need, built-in tuner etc.

Compared to any of my amps... no, just no.
But compared to the other digital stuff I had before, this is considerably better than all of them, including the Kemper. If you need a DI option, this is definitely worth looking into.

Yeah if I hd to buy one, I'd go with the smaller one, since I just need clean/crunch but this was a trade deal so it's all good.

The new editor helps out a ton! Check out the Amalgam captures. They are some of the most amp-like captures I have found. You would probably like their new silver jubilee, slash model, and the friedman captures they have. Their superbass rex and the soldano captures are my favorites. I have 3 of the tonex units now. My son has claimed one, and I have the anniversary edition in white along with the tonex one for a backup in the gig bag.

A buddy of mine grabbed the pedal as well as loves it! I think they really hit all the right points for the device.

The unit sounds great with the stock captures but some of the third-party ones are just insanely good. I bought my first Tonex after not loving the IR-X and wanting to be able to capture my modded ADA MP1 to use live without dragging an aging rack unit. My captures are really close to the sound and feel of the original rack, but those third-party captures from groups like Amalgam, The Studio Rats, Worship Tutorials are just next level.
When the effects sections become slightly more mature, I think I could probably use it standalone. The mod effects are great. I especially enjoy the rotary. The delays and reverbs are good as is, but I would love to see a cathedral reverb setting and maybe a dual delay. The only complaint I have is the Tonex noise gate. I am just so used to the helix noise gates just working how I expect it to.

The Tonex One still has 99% of the features of the big one. The modulations, delays, reverbs, eq, gate and compressor are all there. The units sound identical. You are limited to three models that are easily accessible without getting overly fiddly to get to them. If you need to make adjustments to your effects/compressor settings regularly you will probably need a computer. If you are a set it and forget it kind of person, you are probably fine with this unit.

I keep my One as my "oh crap" something is broke or as a "I am too lazy to pack a board for this short gig". It lives in my gig bag. I keep two presets on the A/B mode that lets you toggle between them. One is a crunchy matchless capture with some delay and verb that cleans up with the volume knob and the other is an over the top high gain lead tone with more reverb and delay. I have made it through entire gigs multiple times with just a guitar, the One and in ears and it sounded good.

Its hard to believe that we have gotten to a point where you can plug something smaller than a snickers bar into the board and sound as good as it does. Golden age of gear.
