Solar fretboard crack/splitting
Solar fretboard crack/splitting
Not trying to hate, I know these have become popular and Ola seems like a good dude. But I’ve heard about the fretboard cracking issue on these and I’ve seen only about a half dozen. But seriously, it’s every one. They all have some level of cracking and binding seperation on the fretboard. This one was particularly bad. Just passing along what I’ve seen. This was a 2022 year. Not sure if they’ve straightened it out yet, but this should be covered under a warranty. And I DO know much of this issue comes from The conditions of the owners house/jam room etc. but I’ve been building guitars for a long time. I have a stack of wood that has been in my non climate controlled back room. I’ve seen some Ebony split back there. But I’ve never had any split this bad. This does start at the source in my opinion where the Ebony they source isn’t properly dried before being used

Re: Solar fretboard crack/splitting
Is there anything you'd recommend to prevent this?
I have one Ibanez with ebony. It has one crack between the 24th fret and truss rod adjuster. Been there since I got it.

oil your fretboard regularly and keep an humidifier in your guitar room during winter. (Or all year round if you live in the desert).

Damn!! Yeah haven’t seen cracking this bad before. I’ve had 2 solars and a close friend has had one for a few years without issues. Mine were good, but I didn’t keep either longer than a year. I liked the green one I had but the V had some crazy neck dive.
I like 5150s. The rest of you bullshit amps can get fucked.

Re: Solar fretboard crack/splitting
yeah FL is humid all year round so it's unlikely for this to be an issue there.
Re: Solar fretboard crack/splitting
Prevent? Keep it humidified. But you can super glue the crack and scrape it clean. It should be almost imperceptible.
yeah that’s a manufacturing “flaw”. There’s plenty of Indonesian guitars being made and it’s pretty much Solar that does this regularly. Obviously don’t know where they source it and dry it, but this shouldn’t be. Even here in Chicago. I’ve only seen one other on this level and it was an acoustic that was in a garage for 30 years. And that’s literal…. A 3yo guitar kept in a house and Played, should never have this problem.

It’s insane how long this has been an issue with those guitars. There are two models I like quite a bit but can’t commit because I don’t want to deal with stuff like this.
It’s not a hard fix but still…
