I took my kids to see Green Day the other night, my 10 year olds first concert and my 15 year olds first huge stadium rock concert. Rancid and Smashing Pumpkins opened for them, funny thing is, I've listened to all these bands off and on for the last 30+ years and have never seen any of them live. My kids could have cared less for Smashing Pumpkins haha, but they were both excited for Green Day.
I missed Rancid, they started early. No big loss, I've seen enough live videos to know that you can hardly hear Tim slur lyrics or play his guitar, Lars seems to carry the heavy load.
We got in right as Smashing Pumpkins started, they sounded great, a little bass heavy on the mix, kind of hard to hear the solos. The only solos I could really hear was James, Billy was hard to hear, I could barely hear Kiki's solos. I'll have to watch rig run downs to see what they've been using this tour, I know Billy changes up his rigs often for tours.
Green Day sounded great, played for like 2 hours, the played the entire Dookie (30th anniversary) and American Idiot (20th anniversary) albums with some other songs mixed in. I like that they used their instruments from the albums when they played songs from those albums. So for the Dookie set, Billie used his blue BJ fernandes strat and Mike used his G-3. Then Billie switched up with his different Gibsons and Mike switched to his Fenders for the rest of the songs. They really did put on a great energetic show.
I wouldn't have normally gone to this, but I wanted to surprise my kids with it because I knew they would love to see them live. When you see them in awe when the band comes out, so worth it. Then it opens them up to wanting to experience more live music.
