That's weird about the Klone. I don't think they have a mid spike, they seem to be pretty transparent... at least the ones I have are.
Eh, maybe the clean bleed just sounds plonky to me.
With the Klones that I have tried, the higher the gain knob goes up, so does the honk. The extra EQ options that the Tumnus Deluxe offers makes them much more usable to me even though the gain knob never gets above 9:00.
Yeah I never set the Gain past 9 o'clock on a Klone. Usually lower than that. Then I set the Volume to be just above unity gain.
That gives me a jangly breakup sound with a clean amp and just the right amount of gain boost with the Marshalls
Maybe something like a BD-2 or derivative thereof? My Keely Super Phat Mod doesn’t have much of a mid hump and brings some nice sparkles on the top end.

I actually tried out a BD-2 and an SD-1 yesterday as well.
They both sound perfectly usable and fine. Makes me confident I could make an all Boss pedalboard.
That said, playing single lead notes on the BD-2 didn't sound quite right. Still good though.
The SD-1 was a big surprise. If it had like 10% more bass, it would perfect. It didn't have anything strange going on in the mids. It sounded awesome. This could DEFINTELY work, should I get the itch for a Boss only board. Great tone.
