I Screwed Up

Post by maggotspawn »

I ran my DSL40CR without a load for 30 seconds.
Derp. Figured it out, and plugged it in to my cab.
Amp still seems to be working. So I assume no damage to tubes, screen grid resistors or the output transformer.

Should be fine, if you had it cranked all the way up for couple of minutes probably not.

Thanks for the reassurance. I need to be more careful.

You're fine, I've done this many times. It's only an issue if you play the amp like that for an extended period of time.
Also, many modern amps have a protective circuit that short out the jacks if nothing is plugged in and mutes the power amp.
Not sure if the DSL is like this, but you're fine either way

Unless one does this for a long period of time, ther chance of damage happening is extremely small. I can’t count the amount of times o e done this for the 30 seconds or so. Even longer when I was too fucked up to think straight. Amps are way more robust than a few seconds without a load

Yeah, been there. I did fry the OT on a Carvin MTS because I kept cranking the volume for about half an hr trying to figure out wtf was going on. But beyond that, I've done this plenty of times with my Peaveys and EVHs without any problems lol.

Might be a dumb question, but for tube amps, the rule should be to flip the standby on first and wait a few, before turning on the amp?

That's what people usually do but its not really necessary you can flip both on at the same time, it won't cause any damage.
Nothing wrong with flipping the standby on first either though. It's fine either way.

I flip them both on and off at the same time.
