Old Marshall’s on 10. how bout the EVH 5153 el34 100 blue channel??

Post by Endtime »

So after that little Traci Gunn video, I actually played the Origin at work and that is a cool amp. Sounds like an old Marshall. Was really digging it. Specially with gain pulled for that bit extra gain and on low power. I think when the amp is really pushin air, is when the low end doesn’t feel great. But in low power it stays nice.

I’ve actually experiment with the blue channel on all 10 (I tweaked the mids and treb down a hair) on the evh, except Pres and Res AND volume, but I never got the results I heard now. Cause it sounds like a fucking old wound up Marshall. Call me crazy but it’s right in the ballpark of VH1 . Of course maybe a touch more gain overall. But it feels good to me. So with the volume on 4.5 was the sweet spot as far as attaining this tone. Like most amps it’s not getting any louder. In fact that runs out at about 3.5 on the post gain.
Used GGD contender for the IR, their Marshall Greenback cab. Sm57 and AKG 414. Used my “Charvel Star” I made with a good ol standard JB in the bridge straight to vol.

Sounds killer man!!! Yeah that's very much like a Marshall, although the high end on the EVH is voiced a bit higher, not in a bad way, just a bit more modern. But it is a great tone!! If I buy an EVH again it will be the 100w 34.

If I had my druthers, I’d say I may have unlocked the “brown” sound in the 5153. A feat no EVH tone chaser (which I’m not I just know of them!) believes can be done!!

That is definitely a cool sound. I think a huge part of the "megapissed" Marshall sound is also having the presence very high/dimed. The sizzle it adds just gives so much aggression to the sound, even if it doesn't have a ton of "gain", it just makes things sound wilder in a way I like.

“Sizzle” got a negative connotation in Internet guitar land I think, but that is where all the harmonics and “vibe “ comes from. That’s one of the main things I always try to dial in right. Which is why , to my ears anyway, a Mesa 8 ohm vintage 30 cabinet loses some of it. Not always but those cabs in particular don’t seem to have the amount I like.

"presence follows the volume" is a good rule of thumb with older Marshalls.

oh it absolutely can be done with the EVH 34. No doubt. Once you get the volume going it gets there.

The people that complain about this are trying to do it with the volume on 0.5. That's not going to happen with ANY amp. Might as well get the kemper

But the EVH 34 in the sweet spot will get there all day.

I agree completely. Back in January we had a local "tone fest", and one of the guys brought his rig which was centered around a DSL40. There came a point where he asked me to play through his rig, and I asked if he minded if I twirled some knobs, so I went over, and turned the presence up and the treble down to compensate, and it sounded so much more alive.

"I don't like fizz" was the reasoning. But that just makes me feel like "I set up the tone in my living room for easy listening and I don't want to change anything", which doesn't work for me, dawg.

Well I was gonna post a live mic’d version which I’ve honestly never got my best tones mic’ing a speaker at its limits. But first it sounds great in the room and it’s honestly virtually identical to this IR clip using my EVH Celestions! So it’s really kinda redundant. I guess I never had the right tone for loud ass recording. I was seriously considering that little Origin for this style but one, this is more even tho the Origin on its own CAN get there but this is just more of everything
