I use something like this:

You can fit about one year (12 issues) per division. So for 20 years you'd need about 5-6 of them. I haven't unpacked mine yet in the new house, but I usually keep them in the studio/music room.

i just use magazine holders in one of those cube shelf things in my "guitar room".

and yeah, the gear ads were as important as the music tabs, lessons, and articles.

EDIT: Billy beat me to it ... didn't see there was a second page to the thread

For the most part, forums were more honest and had better information. They'd tell you what someone actually used instead of what they were trying to shill to a clueless public, and if someone was bullshitting someone else would eventually call them out. You could also ask about whatever you were interested in buying, and not limited to reading about whatever they were interested in selling.

I'd still get them periodically as the internet was still tied to the wall, and I needed something to read while in the bathroom, but it's probably been a decade since I last saw one and I won't really miss them.
Yeah I agree. But guitar magazines are an interesting snapshot in time. Not only for the articles, but also for the ads. I have a pretty extensive collection here, nearly 400 of them lol , which I've been collecting since the mid 80s. It's really cool to open a magazine from say '87 and see the ads of the gear that was coming out at the time.
Thats a pretty awesome collection. I had a few GP but the one I was really into growing up, even before guitar was Hit Parader.

It makes absolute sense why magazines are either ceasing publication entirely, or are going fully online to try and stay in business. The prices for magazines lately is absolutely insane. 10+ dollars for some of these magazines is ridiculous. I bought the Halloween issue of MAD recently, mostly because of Svengoolie, and it was (I believe) $15. They rebooted Fangoria a few years ago, and wanted $20 dollars four times a year for the issues if memory serves. I think an issue of Guitar World is like $10, half ads, and 2 tabs. I'm sure lessons are few and far between. Magazine racks are full, but it seems a lot of people aren't buying. I'm curious where they all go. For instance, one of our local Barnes and Noble book stores has a rather long wall of magazines, and I'd be surprised if those are selling in any regular fashion. I'm sure that "environmental" issues play a part, but I think the bigger culprit to them not selling is the price and the lack of content other than advertisements.

Yeah if you buy them individually they're expensive, but subscriptions are very cheap.

My Guitar Player subscription was $20/year, Premier Guitar is $13/year or $24/ year with the full online access.
That's literally nothing, they probably just charge you the cost of postage for the year. I will probably subscribe to PG once the GP subscription ends in December.

I have a huge box of mostly Guitar magazines along with Hod Rod/cars, and photography in a closet from early 80's and up. It's a great time capsule to look through after many years. Guitar World magazine is still in print, I just received the new issue yesterday with Tony Iommi on the cover.
