Ive also heard modelers, AXE, Kemper, etc sound better. Andy Sneap used them for Testament and tbh you couldn't distinguish real from Kemper.

Ive also owned and AX8 and a Kemper, at a practice years ago my Kemper 6505 sounded better than the real 6505. I've also seen bands using Axe fx live with incredible tone.

Im sure it's mostly user error but I suppose my thoughts when posting this were geared towards recording.

Personally, I do not believe there will ever be a day in my lifetime where I prefer anything over than 100w+ of tube bliss pushing that air into my ballsack.

But as far as recording goes I figured digital is just easier but idk, like I said some people are getting the results I want however I'm just not. There's always something off and something weird about it and I just can't wrap my head around where I'm going wrong......Other than needing to Mike a fucking amp.

My 2 cents

Fuck it. Use what sounds good to you.

Been there done that with live/recording shizz.

There’s some really good fake amps out there, some great sounding digital solutions.

But yeah.

I’d rather run my Herbert into some IRs than do anything digital.

Agreed.

Even on recordings, I can always tell the difference. Then you ask " do you mean that your ears are so good, that if I play you a track, you'd immediately know if it's an amp or digital?" No, not like that.

But when I was recording our last album, I started with a modeler and honestly I was getting really good results and I was happy with it.
Then, just for fun, I decided to try to record one track with a micd amp. And there it was. I ended up re-recording everything with the amp.

Live, it's the same thing. I see a band using digital and go "hey that's actually fine". Then the next band is using real amps, and boom, there it is.

I've heard a lot of good digital tones. But every time I'm completely blown away by a guitar tone, it's always amps.

This is not even for only guitar. Keyboard is my second instrument and I have a Roland FA06 that has incredible tones. I love it. Then I watch someone playing a grand piano in a great room and it's game over.

But yes, "good" is achievable with modern digital technology.

Anyone looked at a digital photo from 5, 10 years ago?

That's how I feel about modelling.

Sorry, I can't read that through the pixelation.

My brother works on films and talked to my un-educated ass on it many moons ago. You can take real film and effectively "blow it up" forever (within reason). But zoom in on anything digital and it turns to shit pretty quickly.

I think I play my modeler about ten times as much as I do the tube amps. So incredibly convenient and decent but it doesn’t have the same feel and dynamics. My playing needs all the help it can get so I will always lean towards the cranked tube stuff I have.
Fender / G&L / Gibson / Skervesen
Bludotone / Bogner / Fargen / Fryette
Analogman / JAM / King Tone / RMC / Strymon / Vertex

It's really just the feel I think for me. Was recently jamming with my friend who was trying to talk me into the Helix, I was playing drums so didn't play the helix myself but it sounded great.

Maybe even better than the other guitarist who is using a evh Stealth, 2 different players however but yeah sounds sick. Just doesn't feel right and I guess I never figured out how to dial them in the right way.

I agree. It's not a fully developed technology yet.
It has nothing to do with being digital. Take digital reverb for example. You can get a Lexicon from 1985 and nothing beats it to this day. They've gotten smaller, cheaper and with more options, but not better sounding.
But digital distortion/amp is not at that point yet. It sounds "great" until the next generation is out and a tube amp smokes them all.
