What was the hype over the Boss HM-2 Heavy Metal pedal about?

Decades ago, I used to turn way down the distortion to get an AM-radio sound for slide. I think since then, I have lost a nut for one of the jacks which causes grounding issues.

I've only played the modeled version of it, but I didn't care for it at all. Like not even as a boost. I could use a Metal Zone as boost. Not the HM-2 though.

The HM-2, with all four knobs dimed, was the backbone for the Sweeedish buzzsaw death metal sound. Those bands were known for using that pedal, which drove prices up, yadda yadda.
I have the Waza version of that pedal, and I’ve used it twice. Then again, I don’t have my rig infrastructure right now, although I just quit my job, and will have three weeks’ downtime, before starting my new gig, so I might get the board up and running again.
