Built another Jaguar. What a PITA.

Post by broslinger »

Man, some builds just really chap my ass. This one has thrown me some curveballs.

Luckily, the core pieces have been great, the problems have mostly been my fault.

I wanted to use the Fender Adjustomatic bridge (like a TOM). I bought a nice brad point bit. Bought dowels and a nice saw to fill the existing holes so I could make the bigger holes. It went relatively well. then, I go to mount it, and I had assumed the AOM Fender had close enough spacing to the Jaguar bridge. NOPE. So, I ended up finding a solution. The kluson offset conversion posts. Great. Then, I find out my gotoh thumbwheels are threaded differently. Buy some kluson thumbwheels. They won't fit the kluson posts. I go to lowes, and test the threads on both items. It should work, but the offset posts were slightly bigger than the thumbwheels threads. So, I buy a freakin die to rethread the posts. It works! Then, I find out my Gotoh TOM (oh, btw, I had to abandon the Fender AOM, because it's for Nashville posts, not ABR.) my Gotoh TOM holes are too big for the Kluson posts, so I have a kluson bridge on the way.

Edit: Oh, I realized the TOM is like miles taller than the Jag bridge, I had to take the neck off twice and install different shims to get it right.

Now, this CIJ Jazzmaster trem starts acting up. The bar collet unthreads, and I have to take everything off to fix it. I remount it, and the trem is binding/clicking/not returning to zero. I take it off again, and tangled up my strings. Had to restring it. I then have to sand out some paint from the trem rout because the CIJ trems are slightly wonky with the string plate sizing. Now, I get the trem remounted and get it restrung and the strings aren't grounded anymore. I had to fiddle with the trem so many times, I broke my grounding wire.

EDIT: I was trying to find the right tool to get the collet threads tight, and cut my thumb on my new woodsaw.

Last night I ended up buying an uber expensive Halon trem, because I fucking hate this Japan trem. Man, this is getting frustrating. It sounds awesome though. Pine MJT body. Warmoth Boatneck. Gotoh locking tuners. Awesome creamery jaguar extra width pickups. Did white switchcraft switches to match the tuners, knobs, and trem tip.

Damn dude, sounds like a real headache. Hope you're pleased with the final result though, it's looking pretty good.

I will be pleased. It sounds awesome and feels great.

Now i know never to cheap out on the trem, and to measure twice.
