Speaking of small amps

I didn’t buy it. A buddy’s letting me borrow it for a bit though. 22 watt 6V6 power section. 800 and 900 inspired cha. Els. Fuchs’a take on a Marshall style amp. I’ll put it against my Seminar and Metro and see what I can get from it.

It’s interesting so far. I just did a test run through some IRs and the Captor (can’t crank it through a real cab right now) just to get some impressions. The controls have a broad sweep on the pots. To get treble you kinda gotta crank it. The 800 channel even cranked isn’t high gain. It sounds good but having never had a real 800 (the Egnater seminar amp doesn’t have a cold clipper on V1B and it’s bypassed to get more gain not unlike the Jake E Lee mods), I’m not sure how accurate it is to a real 800. I can say that it seems the Metroplex on 68 mode has more gain. The 900 mode does bump the gain a bit and seems to add some snarl. Probably Monday or Tuesday I’ll abuse it with my Sd-1 and try to peel some paint. It is a cool amp though and I do like it. My friend’s not a huge Marshall guy and knows I am so wanted to see how I do with it for a bit and what I can dial in and if it’s something he can work with. Ran it with some lower output pickups too. My SG with P90s and Gibson LP Standard with Shaws. I’ll hit it with my Charvel with a DDJ and of course the KH-602 with EMGs to see how it does with those too.

Quick and dirty clip of 900 mode with the gain at 2:00, then a SD-1 added about halfway through. LP Standard with Shaws.

It’s not bad at all. The IRs I used were the Brownyback cab in WoS which is supposed to be based on the EVH 5150 Cab with Greenbacks. It’s a solid go to IR/Cab for me. It’s a fun amp too. Hopefully tomorrow I can run it through a cab. It sounds great with higher output HBs too. Ran my KH-602 through it with the SD-1 on. Same settings on my SD-1. Volume at 12:00, tone at 1:00 and gain at 9:00 to open it up a little. Love that pedal with Marshall amps. I’ve had a lot of fun ODs and boosts but the SD-1 is still my favorite, especially with Marshall style amps.

Got to open it up today with my real 1960A cab with Greenbacks. Sounds excellent. 800 mode is solid enough, especially boosted but I really prefer the 900 mode a bit more. There’s slightly more scoop and definitely more gain to the tone. Pinch harmonics jump out easier too. Also I was running the masters on the higher side. 11:00 to 1:00 depending on the channel. I didn’t care for either channel much below 9 on the master. Smaller power sections don’t hit the speakers as hard right away so they need to be pushed a bit. And Greenbacks benefit from being pushed into some compression. The 6V6s sound great in a Marshall style application too. Great little amp. Awesome for recording applications or applications where you want a bit more power amp push but not as much volume as a 50 or 100 watt head. Still not a fan of the basic TRS in/out for the loop. Pretty much all but guarantees you need to run an outboard buffer for pedal effects in the loop. Rack mounted you may be fine.
