Buying a Captor X soon. What ohm rating? Does it matter?

I was finally able to sell my Gibson Les Paul Classic which means I can finally pickup a Two Notes Captor X. Which ohm rating should I go with? Does it really matter? My amps all have 4, 8, and 16 ohm outputs, but I know some amps don't have a 16 ohm out and I would hate to be limited based on the Captor X should I buy another amp down the road. Am I just thinking too much about it?

I wouldn't say you're thinking too much. It is just as important as matching your amp to cab ohms I would imagine.

I went with an 8ohm version because the 2x12's I used to gig with are all 8 ohms.

If you have both 8 ohm and 16 ohm cabs, I would get the 8 ohm Captor as it's safe to run the amp 8 ohms into the captor and then feed it to a 16 ohm cab. It'll be safe but less punch and output from the cab.

Everything I buy with ohms is 8 ohms. This kinda stems from the 5150 combo just being easier to hook up to an 8 ohm cab since the 16 ohm tap is inside the headshell. So I just kinda stuck with that. But there is a tonal difference, at least with speakers. I would imagine that being similar for these units, but I haven't tried different ohms to know that for sure.

I don't why, but I didn't even think about my speaker cabinets  That just simplifies it. My Jet City 4x12 and my Jet City combo amp speaker all run at 16 Ohm, so 16 Ohm it is!

That's good to know, thank you! I was set on getting a 16 ohm because my 4x12 cab but I also have a Roadking combo, which is 8. My intention is to use the captor for recording so cab wouldn't even be hooked up but in the off chance I want to try the attenuator, it's good to know if I go with the 8, I can use for both.

Go 8 ohm

From Two Notes:

If you connect a speaker cabinet to the THRU output, the internal loadbox is disconnected: your amp is directly connected to the speaker cabinet. As a result, the impedance of the speaker cabinet plugged into the THRU output should match the impedance of the amp. In this situation, the impedance of the Captor doesn't matter anymore: for example, you can use the 16 ohms output of your amp and a 16 ohms speaker cabinet in the THRU output, even if the Captor is a 4 or 8 ohms version.

I've found almost every amp has an 8ohm tap, but not every amp has a 16 ohm tap

This is also a great point. Every Mesa I've owned has not had a 16 ohm tap.

Yeah I'd go 8 in this case. Right in the middle and fits most amps

Also why the Captor X?

The regular Captor is like 1/3 the cost and you can just load IRs in your DAW.
