I worked on a Green Dot Ibanez Universe for my buddy recently and it inspired me to break out the 7 string again. I used to write at least half my songs on a 7 and now I hardly touch it… I have some sort of reason I stopped tuning down. It just became EVERYONE was tuning down. And it is a bit of a crutch for some. But I’m slowly getting back into D flat on my 6s, which used to be how I tuned for all my original stuff and B flat on the 7s.

Anyway my buddy has been jamming a bunch of Morbid Angel cause it’s his first 7, and despite Korn getting a lot of the credit for being 7s into modern heavy music. Which they clearly had more influence. Trey from Morbid used the 7 before them. And this album, Covenant, had 3 songs with the 7. And I was 15 in the 1993 when it came out and it was a game changer for me. I think I can safely say of all albums In the world I’ve listened to this album the most. And still stands up today for me. It’s flawless..

And despite that being my fave album, I never really learned any songs from it. But I learned 2 yeaterday. So it’s fun.. Both are sick ass songs with awesome ideas and playing..

I was jammin this one at 2am last night”night”! My picking arm was burning towards the end of this one!

Dude, still got my green dot :thu:

Those clips were amazing from a timeless album!

Two questions: what did you use to record this? Meaning video and all that.

Second: how's your elbow feel after playing stuff like this? I noticed your wrist and elbow in action during the fast stuff. I ask, because I go to therapy tomorrow for "tennis elbow" and I noticed if I use my elbow less, there's less strain on the tendons.

Again, great job dude, that was amazing!

Damn an OG green Dot!! That was definitely the one of the originals that I always wanted. My buddy has the reissue but it was still a good guitar.

I just used my iPhone. My video budget is $0. Except for the cigarette burning to add the smoke “effect” lol. I recorded these into logic and just used an IR so I wouldn’t have to wear headphones… And mixed it in a bit over the original track and that’s that.

I do pick from my elbow, ANd wrist. I go back and forth. When I was a kid, since I’ve been playing this style since my early teens, I went from the elbow. Cause I played a Jackson Kelly (explorer shape) and the way the arm sits on those guitars I found it just lent it self to use the elbow… As I got older I did start feeling some pain and I worked on getting my wrist more involved. I didn’t really watch this vid for that, but generally I switch between the two depending on the riff and how my arm is feeling.

At the end of Blood on my hands. I was feeling some burn in my right arm, but that’s cause it was literally 2 am and I think my stamina and muscles were tight, worn out. And I could see me lifting my head weirdly at times and that was literally cause my arm was burning and I was pushing thru..

But yeah, my picking technique I feel is pretty good. But it’s very much old school. I get tense. I pick hard. To me it’s death metal. I play it for the aggression and energy. I can’t hold back and pick like some of these guys where they couldn’t even hurt a mosquito lol. I GET it of course. But I’m willing to deal with some pain and discomfort I guess… I’m a hardwood floor contractor, which is a tough gig and still a hockey player. I mean just saying, I’m not against physicality and discomfort cause I live it everyday basically!!

haha. Yes this music really generates a lot of panties thrown on stage.. altho I will say and keep this all quiet. lol. I actually did get a chick from one of my slaye]r band shows who came to a show! How bout that??? It actually does happen! Hahah. Actually that happened many many years ago too… why did I go there? Lol. Oh yeah, you’re a dude, but tits and panties while not exclusively indicating a girl anymore, made me think of all the girls playing death metal has gotten me! Haha

That's awesome dude, you definitely killed it.

I was watching a bit of my playing and like you, I do elbow and wrist as well. I wonder if that could be a death metal thing, cause when I get into my Morbid/Deicide mood it's all over the place. I need to finish our basement, so I can get my recording stuff back up and running, cause this Pixel phone records like ass lol.

Morbid Angel was always great. Definitely agree about the crutch for some. Back in the day when I had a half of a legitimate band going we tuned to D purposely just to try and be heavy in a somewhat normal tuning. There is a band around here that decided to do the same thing in standard tuning (Summoning the Lich) i wouldnt necessarily call them "heavy" but they're pretty awesome despite starting out as a complete Black Dahlia ripoff. Anyway check them out if you want to hear some cool and modern metal in E.

That's about the time when everyone started dropping super low. I got my first 7 somewhere around 2006 ish and since then have gone back and forth at least 5 times between 6s and 7s. There are definitely things to do with a 7 that works and sounds better but ultimately I've ended up going back to and staying on a 6. It's just better for me, especially for faster riffing. Tuned to B when I started learning some Cryptopsy songs and cant see myself in any other tuning now.

I think at my peak in my mid 20s, I could keep up with this. But I don't get enough play time these days to be able to keep pace with songs like this anymore. Would take me some time with daily consistent playing to get back there. But yeah, this speed is so challenging to keep up for 3-4 min straight haha.
