I’m calling it done! Song w/vocals?? Get outta here

Post by Endtime »

I actually do get some vocals done. But I’m working with an old buddy. He’s not a vocalist. But he always liked getting behind the mic and I always heard a little sumthin in his voice I thought could work. Took us a little bit to find his sound but I’m considering this one done!

Im also pretty stoked with the guitar tones. Ended up using a cab with my old 80s t75s. Those are the secondary, lower in the mix tone. And then the lovely and HATED Peavey Sheffield 1200 EVH speakers. The ones I have are great. I feel there was a change at some point that gives these a bad name but I love em. The one difference is I put em in the cab I built. They sounded great on the stock 5150 cab too but I put the EVH new Celestions in that cab. Just because. And I had these laying around and said they gotta be in a cab so I put em in my cab.

Amp is the 5153 el34 100 watt. The main gits are blue channel straight in. Onto the sheffield’s. And the secondary gits is yhe red channel into the t75s.

I don't listen to much metal lately, but that's something that I would definitely listen to. The song kicked ass, I liked the vocals, the guitar tones were great and the mix sounded great.

Sounds killer man!!! Great riffs and tone as always.
I like this singer. He definitely has an unique style. His lower vocals reminds of Max a bit while his higher registry borders on NYC hardcore. It's very cool and adds uniqueness to the music.

Nice!! Sounds great! I've heard this first riff a bunch and was like...oh yeah, I remember this one haha. Then the vocals come in, and it's like oh damn! More modern tone with more old school vocals. Nice!
I like 5150s. The rest of you bullshit amps can get fucked.

He’s literally one of my oldest friends. We don’t hang a TON but back In The day we did. And they all the years of course we’d mess around jamming and recording some “joke” songs at times. Anyway, prolly 20 years ago we just decided to make a super fast grind song. Just ridiculous type stuff. Wrote the song in like an hour and we each took one section for vocals. And his vox just sat in the mix in a good way. That’s the ONLY thing I ever heard of his vox and I always kept that in Mind and as my “real” vocal buddies kept being flakey gave him a call and said “You always wanted to do vox right??? Well do some WoS!” Funny how that one little memory that I really did stock away in my brain that his vocals aren’t that bad sounding ended up being the reason I thought to give him a shot at it

Thanks. Sorta interesting you think it’s more modern. Since I used old ass speakers. And one of those, in the land of the monkey see monkey do/repeat guitar forums, EVERYONE says those 1200s suck and can’t do metal. lol. And I used the blue channel with no boost as the main tone! Very NON modern . I do think that channel is prolly the best channel. Whether it’s modern or not, idk. But it’s more akin to a hot rodded Marshall type tone. It’s just in reality I used fairly older gear and style of tone. It always just comes down to what sounds right, of course. For instance that I went with Quad tracked over my typical 3. I always liked how 3 guitars, left, center, right gave me the size I wanted without being the wall that starts happening with 4 tracks. . That center git adds the depth really effective but still gives that one guitar per side which is generally most raw and “live” sounding. But this time it wasn’t quite there, so I did the quad track and that was the answer.

I guess I just meant it doesn't sound like shit like a lot of those old recordings haha. Maybe I should've said more modern sounding production.

The worst thing about this is the song length. What kind of shit is that? Where's the full album? Totally awesome dude.

Well ok I guess. lol. It’s not THAT old school. Like at all. I’m sure our frame of Reference is WAY different. Cause one, well I should leave it be, but there’s plenty of killer sounding “older” records. Even those that weren’t super well produced but they come across great. If it feels honest and really tru to the band and INDIVIDUAL sounding?, that’s for sure a good sounding recording to me. The days where it was truly rare to hear one bands recording sound exactly like another band was a much more significant time than we even considered back then. Cause it’s just how it was. Everyone basically sounded different cause people were using gear of ALL budgets and types.

I don’t think this recording is all that different than most of mine, but “modern” I don’t consider it cause the ultra modern Hi-Fi production of current metal world is definitely about as far away from what I’m looking for as it gets. And that’s why I’m sticking with the practice I did on my last EP I did up fully which each guitar performance gets its own sound. I’ll be using the same drums and bass so that’ll tie it all together, but each guitar recording will be whatver I’m feeling that day

most would say that’s the BEST thing. lol. It actually was a 1:30 longer at one point but one of the good things, at times, when it takes awhile to get everything done, is I have some time to hear it for a bit. If it was a real performing band, I’m sure we’d cut out the fat as we practiced them week in and week out. Without that, just the simple fact I have it around for awhile and listen in and tweak em here and there over a longer time period I end up getting there in that way. To me, I learned VERY early on in doing this, trim the fat whenever possible. It’s death Metal, not Prog rock. But also I rarely even know how long they are u til I export the final mix. I’m working on many things in a DAW project at once. So often times this might be starting at 10:47 in the project time. And while I can do the simple math required to see how long it is, I just never bother. It’s however long it’s gonna be.
