NcheapPD: Mooer E-Lady

So I’ve been in the Gilmour hole a bit again, especially post Christmas with some of the pedals I got and trying to see how different ones work for different things (note: the Catalinbread Octapussy does a cool glitchier take on the tone of the Time solo. Not a fuzz face but different but still kinda works for that soaring sound). I’ve been eyeing PastFX out of Australia for a couple things and thought about pulling the trigger on their Elastic Mattress - a V2 Deluxe Electric Mistress clone with a bit more tweakability. Only thing is, I only have one flanger, the venerable Boss BF-2 and never use it much. Plus my only experience with the Electric Mistress style flanger was in the Helix and I wasn’t a fan of the modeled version of that effect. So I figured I’d be cheap and order this cheap ass Mooer E Lady and see if I even like the effect. Short answer: I do.
The long answer is I like it a lot. I did the usual thing of firing it up with a boosted Muff and playing some Floyd and yes it does that in spades. I also did some Police type riffing and holy shit this is the pedal I should have had in high school when I was jamming Police tunes with some friends. Also Rush tunes and others. I now finally get why so many prefer this kind of effect as a chorus vs an actual chorus. On to the usage, there seems to be not so much a volume drop but more of a bass cut. Considering I wanted this one just to try it out and see if I even like the sound, it’s more than passed that test. $40 well spent. When I do eventually go for an updated version, it’ll most likely be the PastFX version because again, the additional options and tweaking available on it. But this little box is a blast to play and highly recommended if you want the Mistress effect on the cheap.
