EVH 100S vs Engl FB25

Post by ninjaraf »

In case any one cares lol. I didn't put a lot of time into this, obviously, but this is pretty much how I dial each of these amps. The Engl belongs to my other guitar player, now, but someone asked me to compare them on YT, so I borrowed it and threw this together.

I like 5150s. The rest of you bullshit amps can get fucked.

A lot more low end on the 100w, which is to be expected. The 25w has more mids, also not surprising.
Both amps sound good. In a direct comparison, the EVH sounds much bigger, but the ENGL would be fine on its own.

Evh has more low end and I thought a lot more mids. At least where the mids sit in respect to each amp. I guess the upper mids are broader in the ENGL but the Evh has a lot of those harder mids that are a bit lower in the frequency. They can be slightly problematic tbh. I mean some post eq moves generally solves it, but yeah. More lows and low mids and mid mids, lol. In the Evh. And the Engl is brighter and has maybe the high mids a bit more accentuated. And they really come forward when using the blue gain pot higher. I’ve really found if I’m gonna use the red, prefer to lower the blue gain pot, to scooping the eq like you are here. Just preference. I feel the mids become almost out of the EQ pots range when boosting the blue gain. With it lower, it feels like I can add mids on the red and not feel like it’s too much.

Now the blue channel doesn’t have quite these pokey and abundance of mids. It can. But it handles lower eq setting better. These days, just max the gain on the blue. No boost. Fucking Dime or damn close to it, the resonance. And then use the LOW eq to dial in low end. I’m usually right around noon. Maybe a touch lower. Mids 10 o’clock. And highs 1 -1:30, Presence about the same, or whatver your speakers demand, and I really feel that’s the tone in these amps. Something about dining the gain AND resonance adds, of course, a lot of thump, but I feel it just makes it sound like more gain and it’s fuckin mean with some volume.

Yup, nothing wrong at all with either. I do prefer the EVH. The gain feels more put together. The Engl high end is a a lot more crunchy and present.
