I agree with Bill. The Marshall sound isn't high gain at all. I think it's often the multi-tracking of rhythm parts that makes it sound higher gain than it actually is.
Yep. Multi-tracking is definitely a big part of it.
But most importantly, volume. The Marshall tone is all about volume. In fact, just about any Marshall will have plenty of gain once the master is near or past noon. Even the 800..it's a weakish sounding amp with the volume low and the gain set anywhere, really. But push the volume past the point of power tube saturation and you may even find that the preamp has too much gain when combined with the pushed power section.
Thankfully, that is easy to achieve in the environment JT is talking about, with a load box. I think he'd have radically different experiences pushing these amps through a load vs trying to work with volume constraints and a cab. Marshall = loud.
Just ordered the Suhr RL. I had a bunch of Amazon gift card money I used so the cheapskate in me approves of the purchase
I'm looking forward to seeing how the EVH does with different IRs and not being chained to that headphone out like I am currently. Though I do like the sounds of it much more than I expected; being able to change cabinets will be a great step up for it I think.

Maybe consider grabbing a Palmer PDI-09 to stick between the amp and RL for some chewy analog yummies. It also makes for a very simple stereo recording setup. Send one side through your 010101 effects and leave the other dry.

Good idea. I have had w/d/w on the brain, peripherally. Kind of going against my overcomplication/set it and forget mentality that this thread came out of

I've been praising the virtues of the PDI-09 for live sound forever. Absolutely killer unit through a large PA system.
Is the magic in the analog emulation circuitry you think? Or is the emulation just a good sounding emulation? You couldshoot an IR of the Palmeranduse it in other digital rigs

It's the analog vs digital thing for sure. And it's a good sounding emulation, very much like a 57 with a greenback.
It's not refined enough to be used alone in a studio scenario, IRs have an edge on that but live it just destroys IRs in terms of heaviness and presence in the mix. I use a cab live but my FOH sound is all Palmer. It sounds great on the wedges and IEM too. I don't remember the last time I used a mic, even though I have a cab onstage. Every show the sounguys mic the cab first out of habit, then they hear the DI sound and shut the mic off

Personally, I prefer they way it feels compared to IR's. It has actual weight to it. A little EQ goes a long way. With IR's, I followed John Suhrs' advice and started using a HPF and LPF on the IR's. It definitely helped. But I still had to do some serious leveling with envelopes to get the IR's even competing with the Palmer. Even then, the Palmer still cut right through it. Plus, I also got tired of having 5000 options. I just need a few great sounds to do what I want.
I always go to look at the Palmer stuff when you guys bring it up but it's always only in stock at Thomanns or somewhere oddball. As I look now; the PDI-03 is on Amazon (oddly enough). Load box with baked in analog emulation. It actually looks pretty cool.

You can find them cheap enough used that it's basically stupid not to have one kicking around. It's all I use at this point(also have a PDI-09 that I bought for like $50). But I do intend to get get a RLIR sometime this year.
