Both of them sound amazing through a proper load box. Otherwise as Billy mentioned, they get really loud. Keeping them tame with the load box will yield the exact Marshall tones you’re looking for.
I'm contemplating a second one in March or April if I like this one. I kind of want to get an ABY box at some point to run possibly a 900 Studio and Silver Jubilee 2525, Plexi Studio, or 800 Studio.

The Other Place (TGP) is trying to convince me not to get a JCM900 Studio not because there is something better at that price point, but because there are better things at higher price points, and because the Studio series "is basically a Made in Vietnam DSL" (I am slightly paraphrasing and being hyperbolic, but that's the jist of it). Lol

Yeah that forum never changes. This morning I was reading a thread from a guy who wanted an "affordable, reliable amp" and they were recommending Carr and Carol Ann amps, which start at $4k. :freak:

The studio series are nice, especially for home use and recording, but I think the 20 watt DSL gets close enough that I'd probably buy one of those first.

Because of course they did. Lmao. You have to wonder how much of the responses fall into the sarcasm/trolling category.

Billy steered me away from the current DSL offerings. Lol

Yeah I am not a fan of the current "HR" series of the DSL. They made too many changes on the circuit and it doesn't sound as good as the previous models. The 20w was especially underwhelming.

Since you're Mr. DSL, I'm willing to give you much more say in that, as you've had a lot of experience with that amp model.

I reached out to Dave Friedman regarding the JEL50 and Plex (since Sweetwater has a few that are discounted demos). I got a lazy response regarding the volume placement of the JEL50. If I get a lazy response to my follow up (regarding the Plex and if the amps are able to do low volumes in addition to louder/stage volumes), then I'm going to pass. Getting a lazy response prior to handing over my cash doesn't seem like a recipe for a good working relationship after paying for an amp if something happens.

I don't think it's a lazy response, he handles all the customer service himself and needs to keep things short in order to reply to everybody. Email Marshall and see if you get any reply at all directly from the designer/owner.

His amps are definitely able to do bedroom volumes as well as stage volumes. That's probably the biggest strength of Friedman amps, his master volume is great.

I loved my SV20 but seeing inside was extremely underwhelming. TGP says that bc the transformers are the same they use for all of their 20 watt amps (origin, DSL, etc) and the boards are made and populated in Asia. The amps are simply assembled in the UK.
