Yeah dude, what are you using for mastering?
I struggle with getting it louder and just use stock limiter plugins from the DAW but they don't seem great

Interesting, I didn't know that was a thing. I can't program drums for sht and I loathe the process of hacking together drum loops for a clip that don't even sound that good anyway

I use
Softube Weiss MM-1. It's the best mastering compressor I've tried. It goes on sale for less than $100 semi-regularly, or you can pick up a license on KnobCloud. It's a 1:1 recreation of the mastering portion of a $10k hardware unit (the Weiss DS1-MK3).

Honestly it's been the ultimate game changer for demoing. It lets me put a basic beat onto things and share them with the our drummer and bassist to lay things out. In garageband, add a track and pick drummer. there's a handful of different styles, and mostly i just shift to make the backbeat match what it's my head, which our drummer can then turn into something real.
