My thoughts on the Peavey 3120

If I had the space I’d love to get a Recto cab and an Orange PPC Cab and compare em against each other at proper volumes. Swap the speakers from one cab to the other too to keep the comparison close. 1960 cabs have their own sound and most folks copied them. Recto cabs DEFINITELY have their own sound and they’re awesome too. Would love to have the Orange Cab there and compare all three.

That’s weird. I’ve had great experiences with peavey cabs. I even have my old 5150 cab still that I converted to a shelf in our living room haha.

But the Mesa will be better anyway. My other guitar player borrowed one from another band at a show and was blown away. Then he borrowed mine to confirm and bought one lol. They sound absolutely massive and for chuggy metal there simply is not a better cab.

I did swap 2 of the v30s with redbacks, though, and it sounds even more massive. I have the same speakers in my doronzo 412, and that can sounds fucking great but not massive in the way the Mesa does. It’s tighter and more focused, maybe more controlled? Whatever it is, it still sounds great!

My ksr 212 has the same speakers, too, but in 16 ohms. So all my cabs are 8 ohm.

I'm not sure if the casters are original but they do look pretty small and that could be the issue. I doubt they'll fit but I have a 2nd set sitting around I can try.



Yeah Ideally I want to get the older, traditional Mesa. Been going down the which one of the 300 vintage 30 models type of thing and I think that cab is my best bet.

Found a couple of leads but it's either drive very far and pay a little more than I'd like to or gamble with one on GC with bad pictures and probably end up returning it :p

I did find an OS for a steal at $450 but it's just entirely too far away for not the exact model I want.

Those casters are not original. Peavey casters aren't very big, they are sturdy.

Man, that's a nice set up. I had a JP2c and would put it in my top 5. Bet those sound great in stereo.

Also yeah, they do look like cracker jack wheels.

I only have some ernie ball casters sitting here and the post is probably 3x the size of the hoke. You guys have any to recommend that would fit?

I put WGS Vet30s in my old XXX cab, they are so much better. If you can get a quad of V30s for a deal, there's no shame in putting them in the 5150 cab.

As for power tubes, don't bother. If they work, leave them be.
