Sounds huge

Kind of surprised at the amount of gain for a 70s amp with no boost too

The first time I played George Metropoulos’s actual 68 Super Lead I was floored by how much gain it had. He had it on a Hot Plate attenuating it. It was monstrous. Even with lower output HBs in his Gil Yaron LP, lots of singing sustain there. The 70s amps are based off the 69 circuit which had even more gain than the 68s. They actually squeezed a ton of gain out of the old Super Leads. The whole thing about EVH using a mostly stock Marshall with a variac makes sense in that regard. You just had to either be able to withstand the sheer volume or have some way to attenuate it. In this day and age we have more options than ever for attenuation and loading it down so you can have plexi roar at manageable volumes.

Yeah a plexi has a ton of gain. Maybe not enough for modern metal, although it gets there easy with a boost.
But for rock, I can't imagine needing more gain except for a lead boost.
