How does the Custom compare to the JB? I've been thinking of swapping out the JB in my sunburst LP because it honks a little too much.

Exactly what you just said. Less honk. The custom is more even across the frequencies, while the JB has that honky mid bump.

The Custom, to my ears, has a bit less honk. It’s more like a hot PAF type voicing.

I might have to pick one up. The JB has done it's thing for 12 years but I think it's time for a change. Anyway, back to the new LP ogling :D

Yeah I have a LP with a JB here, (my Studio), and that guitar definitely has a narrower tone that is centered around the midrange. Which can be good in some cases since that's where the guitar sits in a mix anyway, especially during leads. The Custom takes up a lot more real estate in the mix on rhythm parts. It sounds much fuller. On leads, I feel the Custom needs a bit more of boost (volume/mids, not gain) to stand out while the JB cuts through easier.

A possible solution for this is to buy more Les Pauls so you can have one with each pickup. That's a solution that I strongly support and advocate for

My LP is also a faded and it sounds and resonates well. It sounds very large compared to my previous LP, no matter what pickups I tried in that one.
Yeah black LPs are my favorite. It took me a while to realize that. I was always looking at the nice flametop LP pics, but the black LPs look better on me

Put a Kahler, GraphTech Ratios, and a set of EMGs, but not the ones Zakk Wylde uses, in it. You can do better than your main guitar, do worse than your main guitar, or do different than your main guitar. I am advocating for the third option. But definitely use the Fishman Fluence battery pack for Les Paul, and do the mod to make it work with EMG.

The Kahler: There’s only one model that works, so pick the color you want.
The tuners: GraphTech make tulip buttons, and they don’t look too bad on an LP.
The EMGs: Do the TW pickups - 89R in the neck, 81TW in the bridge - NA toggle, long shafts, kill switch, and the aforementioned Fishman battery mod. Until EMG gets with the program, and develops their own, preferably with a USB Type C plug, it’s the only available option.
