I've used one for years now. As mentioned, a half step sounds decent, and doesn't mess with your tone too bad. You can even get away with a full step, but anything more and it starts to sound and feel a bit loose and flubby.

Tune to Eb and put a capo on for the songs in E

That would work if I had one song in E and the whole set in Eb but it's the other way around.
