Guitar Player magazine
They're publishing their final print issue in December and move to an online only format. Which makes sense, but it's also sad. I grew up reading that magazine and subscribed to it on/off gor over 30 years. I like getting the magazine in the mail and sitting with it to read it.
I'll probably going to subscribe to Premier Guitar after December. They're a good one, but GP was THE magazine for me. So yeah it's a bummer. End of an era.

On the bright side, at least they'll still be a round. For a little while. So many print mags went kaput. I kinda miss diving the old drug store racks and walking away with a handful of mags to keep me entertained for the next couple weeks, but I haven't done that in long enough I can't really blame them for disappearing.

Guitar mags became irrelevant around the time that forums started to pick up.
For the most part, forums were more honest and had better information. They'd tell you what someone actually used instead of what they were trying to shill to a clueless public, and if someone was bullshitting someone else would eventually call them out. You could also ask about whatever you were interested in buying, and not limited to reading about whatever they were interested in selling.
I'd still get them periodically as the internet was still tied to the wall, and I needed something to read while in the bathroom, but it's probably been a decade since I last saw one and I won't really miss them.

Yeah I agree. But guitar magazines are an interesting snapshot in time. Not only for the articles, but also for the ads. I have a pretty extensive collection here, nearly 400 of them lol , which I've been collecting since the mid 80s. It's really cool to open a magazine from say '87 and see the ads of the gear that was coming out at the time.screamingdaisy wrote: ↑Mon Oct 21, 2024 9:58 pm Guitar mags became irrelevant around the time that forums started to pick up.

Agreed about them for a snapshot in time, in the late 80's early 90's I had subs to Guitar for the Practicing Musician, Guitar School and Guitar World, I ended up tossing a bunch around 95 which I regret. I ended up collecting more since but I have held onto those.
Funny reading old reviews on stuff and looking at pricing of things at that time.

Guitar World is likely next. (That is, if they aren't already online only.) Printed magazines are not really necessary these days.

This. For me...exactly. Learned so much about players I would not have otherwise come across. Very much wish I had kept all those old issues. Hell, if I'm not mistaken I got the Steve Vai flexi of 'Blue Powder' in one of those. Man, I am OLD.Guitarbilly wrote: ↑Mon Oct 21, 2024 12:06 pm They're publishing their final print issue in December and move to an online only format. Which makes sense, but it's also sad.
