Drums?

Post by bonano »

Anyone know anything about drums? I know nothing and can’t even play them. But I’m thinking of getting an okay and affordable kit for my classroom for students to bang on.

As is, I have students who bring their own guitars and jam through my little amps like a Marshall MG10 and a Blues Jr. with a Metal Zone. They play stuff like “The Trooper” and “Seek and Destroy.” It’s very satisfying to see kids still into Metal and even playing the guitar. There’s a drummer in the bunch who sits in a chair banging his head while slapping his lap. I figure if I get an okay drum set, I can get this kid involved too.

Prices for a used kit are all over the place. I’m coming across all these brand names and drum sets sold with or without hardware and cymbals. I want to just buy a whole kit and not have to think about piecing together parts and components.

The kit doesn’t have to be specific for metal, as I have thoughts of eventually having an open mic kinda thing in my classroom one day for the singer-songwriter types at the school.

Thus far, just from looking at pics, it looks like $200 to $300 is my target. I’m seeing a kit called a Ludwig Backbeat that looks affordable and somewhat reliable. I guess I’m looking for a nice Squier to MIM-Fender equivelent of drums.

Any thoughts?

The Backbeat is a smaller set. Nothing wrong with that, it just sounds different, less volume and thump. It could be perfect for a classroom setting. But some drummer's don't like to play a small kit.

I have a Ludwig Accent, which is their entry level, full size set. I bought it used for $200, including hardware and basic cymbals. It's been pretty good and reliable. We have been using it for band practice for 4 years. My drummer brings her cymbals, snare drum and Hi-hat stand because she has really high quality stuff and prefer to use hers. But she uses the rest of the kit with no issues.

So anyway, the Ludwig entry level stuff is decent. Either the Backbeat or Accent would be fine, depending on the size you want.
