Preference over Slant vs. Straight 1960s or other cabs?

Post by bonano »

Just curious.

My "rat" cab is a straight, and I have a slant checkerboard buried inside the house. Looks-wise, I think I prefer the straight.

I have owned several of both, but prefer straight. Both sound and appearance.

I've used the same 1960A slant cab since the early 00s, I bought it because I got a great deal on it ($150).
I think I like straight cabs slightly more but not enough to get rid of my cab or bother with buying another.

What speakers are in yours?

V30s now. It originally came with 75s but I changed it to Greenbacks and then V30s.

I miss the 75s tbh. Maybe I'll get a straight one with them in the future.

Marshall put 65s, 70s, and 75s in their cabs?

Marshall put a bunch of speakers in their cabs. My 1960A came with G12T75s and I swapped those for Greenbacks/G12M25s. Current Marshall 1960AV/BV cabs come with G12 Vintage speakers (Marshalls OEM version of the V30). 1960AX/BX come with G12M25s.

Over the years the Marshall 1960 cabs have come stock with:
G12M25s (including greenback, Creamback and blackback speakers), G12-65s,G12-T75s, G12Vintage, possibly G12M70? I thought those were more budget line cabs but I could be wrong.

The 1982 cabs came with G12H30s(including greenback, Creamback and blakcback speakers), G12-80s and G12H-100s. The 1982 cab is their bass spec cabs. Physically they’re identical to 1960 cabs. Just higher wattage speakers. I think those were discontinued in the late 80s.

Also Creamback speakers did exist in the 70s but they weren’t referenced as a different model or wattage. They were just G12M or G12H speakers with a different colored magnet cap. That being said, the formula for the cones did change over time from the original greens onward and Creambacks and Blackbacks both have their own sonic characteristics despite being the same wattage as the originals greenback versions. Still the same speaker family for sure but with some differences. It’s not super necessary to deep dive into those as much today with all the options we have now, but just something to be aware of.

I prefer the look of the slant cabs provided you're just using a single cab....... tonally either are fine for me
I can't remember what my signature was..... I'm sure it was something interesting..... :quote:

Generally like a straight but doesn’t really matter. BUT.. and some have tried to theorize why, angled cabs and the actual
Angled speakers of those cabs, usually are the best spot for mic’ing and recording. I won’t get into peoples theories and ideas why, but I have found most of my favorite tones were the top speakers in an angled cab. Or at the very least those have less anomalies, and stray resonances or spikes than the bottom speakers in an angled cab.

But right now my 2 fave cabs for live and recording are straight cabs. Obviously just about every speaker can be mic’d and engineered to sound great. But it really does seem the top 2 in an angled generally give the easiest and truest reproduction of the tone
