Got my Super Lead back from the shop

Post by Guitarbilly »

I took it to Pete Cage to have him go over the whole amp and just make sure everything was ok. He found several small mods that were done to it over the years (different cap values etc). He returned everything to stock specs and holy shit, the amp sounds even better now  quieter (hiss, not volume), punchier and warmer.

I will post some clips this weekend. :)

See that’s why it’s good to have a proper amp tech who knows his shit about Plexis. Good stuff man! Excited to hear it.

Pete is a character. His shop website says "no Peaveys" "No Carvins"

He ONLY works on vintage style amps. Not even the DSL is approved

But man does he know his shit.

That’s like Dean Zink up here. There’s just certain amps he won’t touch. But if you need ANYTHING done to a vintage Fender? That’s your guy. He also did great work on the Vox AC30H2 I had. He has a list of brands on his website that he does service. I don’t think I’d ever approach him with a Peavey hahaha.

Likely doesn't want to fuck with switching relays and other such gimmicks.

I wish I knew of a good amp tech nearby to give my 2203X from 2007 a good once over. No idea how old the power tubes are and a few hands have been inside of it prior to me owning it for mods and repairs. I want to send it to David Hopkins since he did the Pandora mod but shipping these is a PITA anymore. He is only 3+ hours away though so would most likely just deliver it.

F it. Reaching out to him today to see if I can schedule a day to drop it off.

Yeah 3 hours drive is annoying but I'd rather take the drive than ship it.
It's tough not to have good techs around. I was spoiled while I was living in LA, lots of great techs available there.

Here in the DC area, it's a bit limited. I have Pete for vintage amps and a couple of techs for the other stuff. I was working with ProTech for a while but they changed techs and the quality went downhill. So now there's Big Crunch in Baltimore, which is really good but they're always crazy busy so turnaround is slow. There are a few other shops that I haven't tried yet.

So it's alright but nothing like it was in LA. That's one of the things I miss about living there. But not much else

LOL.... my amp tech has pretty much a no Mesa Boogie rule.... anything vintage he's all about, he won't absolutely turn away modern Marshalls, Carvins etc.... but he's only willing to do so much to them.... the real issue being so many of the modern amps aren't designed to be serviced, got a problem on a PCB, order a new one which is great when you live in the US or UK etc... but not when you're in an island in the Caribbean... often getting the part is near impossible and then by time we ship them in, pay taxes and labour you could almost buy a new amp
I can't remember what my signature was..... I'm sure it was something interesting..... :quote:
