I have no experience with P90 pickups, and though it seems P90s are mostly associated with LP jrs and specials, I think they’re rad AF on SGs. But I can’t justify paying Gibson prices to satisfy my curiosity.
The Epiphone route is much more sensible to me and I enjoy my Epiphone Explorer. So I’m wondering if a set-neck Epi SG w/ P90s would be a decent intro into the world of P90s.
Any experience? I thought I read someone here hating Epi P90s. I can always buy aftermarket P90s later.
I would play pop rock with it through a DSL100H or various-sized Fenders. I like cleans, dirty cleans, and overdriven tones.
Thanks.

I would be fine IMHO especially if you are buying new. Epiphone's quality has improved a lot over the years. They're good guitars these days. I'd maybe consider changing the pickups but I do that on almost every guitar anyway.

Re: Thoughts on Epiphone SG w/ P90s
Newer Epiphones are generally fine. I’d yank the existing pickups for sure though. I keep forgetting that 2016 was so far back when I got my Gibson P90 because it was listed at $1099 new and my friend who worked at GC gave me his discount so I paid closer to $900. I miss those days.
As to Aftermarket pickups, honestly Gibson’s actual P90s are great. I love mine. You could also try Wolfetone also. His Mean and Meaner 90 sets get a lot of love.

Re: Thoughts on Epiphone SG w/ P90s
I had a Gibson sg special and I was planning on swapping the gibson P90s for BKP Mississippi queens or Stockholm 90s. I ended up trading the guitar before I got around to that though

I have an Epiphone SG Special P90
It's a very decent guitar for the money. Great comfortable neck, and the pickups do sound pretty good, but I don't have a lot of P90 experience so...
