NEW SONG: Water Music. Like the Cure. Boss Dimension
I was dying to get this down on tape. I heard a line in an Alvvays song that said "Take me sailing out on the Atlantic". It just resonated with me. Plus, I was on the beach watching a sandcastle get repeatedly destroyed by the tide. I figured it was a metaphor for my life.
I used a new guitar.

Very cool, man. Vocals are the stand-out here, but the guitars sound nice and fat too.

Thanks a lot dude.
I uploaded a slightly updated remix.
Added some cymbal.
Added some dirty guitar. My moth electric rat.
Added some dirty reverbed guitar during the end refrain. Used my science mother pre.
Changed how the drums and bass came in.
Added back some lyrics back in the 2nd bridge
Taned the tape echo in the second bridge.
Seems more cohesive, dynamic, and epic.

Another banger, as usual, great tones, good song and great mix.
Do you write and record all this very quickly or do you have stuff in process and you finish up later because you seem to be putting out new stuff pretty quickly lately
I found with myself, once I get going, I come up with songs quickly but if I don't write and record lyrics at that time, I have a stock of unfinished songs that will sit there until I finally go and get them completed.

Great question. Here is the process:
Any time i think of interesting/profound/sad words and phrases, i type them into my notes app on my phone. I do the same thing if i have a dream. Then, i email it to myself and put it into the office software on my daw machine.
I usually do this about 3-5 times before i’m inspired to make a song. (Or multiple songs if i’m lucky)
When i am ready, i record a drum beat. I let it play for 5-7 minutes so i don’t run out of space.
I have about 30 years of music in my head that i just add to the drum beat.
(Every now and then i am emulating another artist, and it makes it easy to know what to do. Alvvays, echo and the bunnymen, deftones, etc)
Day one = drums and rhythm guitar.
Day two = finalize lyrics. Sing. Bass. Solo guitar. Mix
I’ll put it on soundcloud expecting to fix something on day 3.
That’s it. I attribute the process to psylocibin microdosing. My buddy wants to start doing this live with me with ableton. I guess it will be like a Cocteau twins type situation.
Btw, thx for listening!!

Cool, always interesting to hear other peoples process for writing.
I turn on my laptop, open DAW and will either just plug in with POD Go, real amp w/ captor or set up a mic and grab an acoustic. I'll come up with chord changes I like, might have a rough idea of structure of song, sometimes I think up a bridge other times I may just come up with it on the fly as I record lol. The structure of the song usually is improvised as I record. Then I double track guitars then add bass.
Then I hook up my midi keyboard to do drums - even when I used 4 track tape, I did drums like this - I will record drums live using drum software, but I start with first doing only bass drum, snare and fills, second time I do cymbals and hi hats. Then while the keyboard is out, I decide if I need other midi instruments which could be organs, piano, synths, orchestra. Then if I decided to add a solo, I'll do that and maybe add some more guitar.
At that point, I already may have a vocal melody I was humming, so I will do a scratch vocal track using that melody with improvised lyrics to decide if I like the melody. Not gonna lie, sometimes I have been happy with that scratch track and have released a couple songs with improvised lyrics. Other times I will actually write something then do vocals.
The longest part of my process is the mixing , I can weeks to months playing with it until I finally find something I am okay with releasing. I have found that a lot of times, the first time I mix something, I think it sounds great and will listen to it over and over and feel the same way. Then I do nothing with it for a couple days then listen again. I end up catching a lot of stuff wrong I didn't notice before with the mix.

Definitely something to be said for leaving it alone, then catching something you don't like in the mix.ElDirtySanchez wrote: ↑Fri Jul 18, 2025 3:25 pm Cool, always interesting to hear other peoples process for writing.

Mixing can be funny. It's amazing how something can sounds great at the desk, and then just suck in the car or on the phone.
Getting better monitors helped a lot though. Loving my Yamaha NS-10 Pros.
It's interesting you record the drums later. Do you play guitar over the metronome track in the daw or something?
