So I borrowed this Randall XL cab from the owner at my shop. He has 8… lol. Just to check it out as I heard good things, and it just wasn’t my bag at all with the v30s. And it’s been sitting here for prolly 5 months. lol. So he mentioned he’s gonna be selling some and I wanted just the box empty. But he wasn’t down with that, but I bought it anyway. I have these Evh Celestions I’m convinced needed to be loaded in a more typical cab, than some of my others which are front loaded. They sounded good in there too but my hunch was they sound great in the Randall.. And they do! Very happy with it.. Also when I opened up the Randall to remove the speakers, there was 3 16 ohm and one 8 ohm! What the?? And no this cab is virtually brand new. From 20 years ago, but I could tell nothing had been changed.. Somehow they fucked that up. I don’t think that would alter the sound a ton, but Iwasn’t a big fan of the can in its stock form. Idk
I finished this song about a month ago. With vocals. Redid it with the Randall and Evh Celestions. Used a 57 and Beyerdynamic 401…

Uh-oh, you’ll prolly like this better!! Since I put that one 8 ohm speaker that was in the Randall in my other 4x12, which also has 2 Evh Celestions but 8 ohm.. and we know that makes a difference. I made an sm57 on vintage clip!! I mean, it turned out better than I thought tbh. But not really any different than a v30 clip I’d wager.

I a/bd quite a bit yesterday on different sources. And the Evh just adds a bit of life and .. I guess excitement to me. The v30 clip turned out better than I thought. Altho that’s the first 8 ohm Vintage 30 I’ve ever had besides the mesa ones, but they are pretty different. I used to have 16 ohm ones and they were just too raspy up top. This is fairly neutral to me. But a bit darker than the Evh.. there is also a center track of the eminence CV75. I recorded that awhile ago and seemed to be the one that fit best to mix in. . That’s a really nice v30 type tone. Kinda fills the void of a regular v30 and mesa. It’s got the wide and richer/warmer mids of the mesa, while still having a bit of extra “info” up top… I could see that being GREAT for leads. And is no slouch for rhythms… would be cool to hear those in an oversized cab… I think you’d dig em quite a bit.

I like both but prefer the EVH speaker better. At some point my ears grew tired of the V30 sound, although this has less of the upper mid spike than usual. Still a killer tone though. Wicked riffing and great tune!
Re: “New” cab. A little re-recording!
Yeah, damn! Got me considering these EVH speakers again. I had some before and they sounded weird. But now I saw Celestion is in a current period where the cones are good, so new speakers seem to be sounding pretty great from them. So annoying lolol,.

I didn't know they had cone issues. Im currently rocking creamback neos in my Legacy combo with a v type in the giant oversized 1x12 thiele cab I built and that combo is great for all genres and super light for easy transport. Sounds almost indistinguishable from my 4x12 with Scumback blackbacks on top with G12t75's on bottom which is my favorite speaker pairing.
Re: “New” cab. A little re-recording!
Not issues, necessarily, just that the cones seem to have been slightly differently during some periods, and it seems to greatly affect the sound of the speakers. So you have 2 V30s from different time periods that sound completely different. Even newer. Like say one from 2020 vs one from this year.
