NGD, Back to the 8 String World

Technically, I still had an 8 string, but it was the 25.5" V that makes those bottom strings more of a thuddy rubber band than a playable string. Any rate, wanted to get a longer scale, and Rondo finally had a sale on the 30" scale Intrepid Pros. Neck-thru, active pickups, plays alright though the neck is still settling so needs a little under a quarter turn a day on the two truss rods. I'm assuming that'll stop in a few days. Original strings couldn't be tuned up, the ball ends came unwound when tuning the top two strings to pitch. Labellas to the rescue, they worked just fine.

It took a few minutes to get used to the scale, but it ain't bad when standing. I have to figure out how to hold it sitting, because it ain't good classical. Like, at all. That neck sticks out into the stratosphere, or I end up hunched over like Quasimodo. It's wild hearing that bottom string actually sound tight and not floppin' around like a loose rope. Spent the weekend practicing my old 8 string tunes and trying to get my fingers used to the new stretch.

I kinda dig the pickups, but am debating grabbing another 57/66 EMG set for it. Or maybe some X series. We'll see how it does in a recording this week or next.

Aside from a six string bass, this should about do it for my new instruments this year. Got a whole bunch of songs I wanna finish up and start final recordings over the next couple months. Fingers crossed for a fall/winter album.

Looks great, congrats!!

I wouldn't know where to start with a guitar like that. I already have enough problems with 6 strings

Me too. But I find the problems translate pretty well to eight strings. For some reason, sevens throw me way off. Apparently I'm an even number guy. :cop:

Dude noice! I can’t stand 8s with less than that scale, they just don’t work for me.

I don’t need an 8, I don’t need an 8, I don’t need an 8

I dig the no inlays thing too. Both of my 8 strings currently have the no inlays thing. It's a clean look.

I *can* make shorter scale work. I've had two 28" scale, and still have my 25.5" scale, which is REALLY pushing it on that low string, but the 30" scale just hits right. No browwwww initial attack, and a nice tight response.

If you have to repeat that you don't need an 8, you definitely need an 8.

Congrats and HN8STRINGGD!!!! WOO HOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah man, that thuddy, dead string on short scales blows chunks!!! Glad this one doesn't have that issue!!!
The E string on my short scale EB3 bass really sucks ass.... I have to pick (yes, I use a pick on bass) right next to the bridge saddle to make it sound 1/4 way decent.... totally bogus!!! :cop:

SERIOUS QUESTION: Can you bar chord all 8 strings? I've only owned 6 strings and call me curious!

I can and have done bar chords on all 8 strings, but it gets a little tricky. Typically, if I'm going for a big chord, I'll hold a finger over one or two strings to mute them as I swipe across the rest with the pick.

At my age (my Medicare card arrived last week fucking eww!!!) I'm not so sure I could deal with two extra strings!!!
