NGD = Pointy V Collection++;

Post by nightflameauto »

I've been wanting to fill out the pointy V collection a bit. Requirements were no more bolt on Vs, no offsets (like Rhoads), proper jack placement (inside upper wing). Preference: Mahogany body, passive pickups.

Saw the Mustaine Vanguards were starting to cut pricing and jumped once they dropped below the 1k mark. I really like the Vanguard carve, with the slight curve to the bevel, but most of them are offset Vs. I figured this was probably the only way I'd have a shot at a full body one without finding a custom shop somewhere.

New family pic:

The case is RIDICULOUS.

There's literally enough room around the headstock my two cats can sleep around it when it's in the case, and there's probably room for another two cats around the end of it.

Aside from the case being an arm killer walking across the parking lot at work, pretty happy with it. I had them put a new nut on it, and they did a great job cutting it. The bridge was too high, but that was an easy solve. Spent some time setting it up for myself last night, then played and jammed with a bud until way too late. That bridge pickup is *WAY* more bass-full than I expected in a Mave guitar. Not a bad thing, but at this point I'm thinking I'll be lowering it a bit to take a small amount of that thickness away. Right now it sounds like it'll curb-stomp the bass in the mix. Probably has to do with the fact that the bridge was so high when I got it and I didn't lower the pickup when I lowered the bridge.

Likes:
Set neck
Mahogany
Pickups are hot but crystal clear
Plays like butter
Ridiculously resonant and full sounding, even not plugged in.
Dat neck. Slickest finished neck I've ever played, thin but not razor thin, shreddy but not hand-crampy
The finish is way more lush in person than online pics would have you believe.
Headstock seems a mix of the explorer hockey stick and the Jackson style pointy. Very cool looking in person

Dislikes:
Mini-Dave on the back of headstock. Meh, but serial. As I said to my buds, "Putting your guitar pose on the back of your guitar is a little like masturbating to yourself masturbating, but whatever."

Dots? DOTS? I'd rather no inlays like the Agile than dots, but at least they aren't blinged out in abalone

I had 'em put a new set of tuners on. In the past I've had good luck with these auto-trim bastards, but these are stiff and rattly feeling. May have to replace them at string change for something better. Been eyeballing Hipshot open gear lockers for it. Though have been curious about the graphtech ratios too. Guess I'll see.

Bridge is on "backwards" currently. I mean, it doesn't hurt anything, but adjustment screws toward the pickups always look :freak: to me when I pay attention to it. May have to swap it around at string change.

The logo font. It doesn't hurt the guitar, but it doesn't really help either.

Overall, I really dig it, even with the minor gripes. I spend a couple more nights tweaking it to my preferences and it should fit right into the stable.

Gettin' excited to put it in a mix up against my cheapass Jackson that's been modded to within an inch of its life and beaten to shit over the years. Hopefully have clips this week at some point.

Next on the agenda: Neck-thru V. This is the GGF way. New guitar, already planning the next. :cop: Though I have some other expenses to take care of first.

I like these guitars quite a bit. The main thing stopping me is the logo font  If it had the regular Kramer logo I'd buy it.

The Gibson model is really awesome too. I am actually tempted to buy that one.

Also, don't forget it's green lolol

I like these, too. Played one at GC and it was pretty great. Probably not something I would buy, though, considering the Vs that I do have are pretty spectacular.
I like 5150s. The rest of you bullshit amps can get fucked.

I can hear Glenn Fricker ranting about how Gibson can’t make a good guitar, and how you’re just paying for the names on the headstock. He had a particular hatred for the Mave V, and made several videos defending his thesis.

Fuck, I’m glad I’m only interested in an Aristides H/06.

But, on a serious note, I dig the OP collection, and I do actually like the Mave Vs, especially the Gibson.

I only see him as a clickbait generator, so I assume he hates the Quad Cortex. Good thing, too, because that’s what I’m currently using.

lol. Not a bad decision. I saw his vid on the Gibson Mustaine and he’s so ridiculously full of shit claiming he’s an expert in paint from his times in a car factory. Seriously I could pick apart every damn thing he claimed in that. I unfollowed him awhile ago. I can’t believe I actually clicked subscribe at one point. I think my dislike for his dumb ass roped me in a for a bit. Lol And seeing what all he was wrong about. But that “review” was clearly him having a dick up his ass about expensive American made stuff that he loves to say a Chinese Harley Benton outperforms.

The Gibson model is pretty cool too. I'm just more into the sharp points. Enough to overcome my mild ick at the logo. Not looking at the logo while I play anyway. :idk:

I do want a Gibson V at some point, but the Mustaine Gibson just seems like a halfway between Gibson / Jackson style, and I'm more a give me one, or de other guy.

The green don't hurt. Reminds me of some of the older Mopar colors. And yeah, your V collection is pretty epic.

Slightly bigger in every dimension:

You really notice it in how much further out the neck is, which doesn't look like much here but you can feel it when playing it sitting with the point propped against your leg.

I've never had the opportunity to put the JS32 up against a higher grade King V, so I'm not sure if they're cut down just slightly or if this was a design decision from Dave or Kramer.

Fricker's got a mad hate-on for Gibson. He's whined incessantly about how he can never keep Gs in tune on them. Seems a user error to me.

Don't know if the hate is entirely genuine, or if he's spent too much time hanging with the types that used to populate the electric guitar forum over on HC. You know the ones, constantly bragging about how their Xavier and Rondo guitars were four times better than any Gibson they'd ever touched, even though in reality they'd probably never been in the same room with a Gibson unless it was on the stage in front of them. Probably helps with the click-bait potential he seems to thrive on.

Oh, and his bullshit about making a Peavey Pawn Special sound *JUST LIKE* a Soldano Slo. Sure, you can dial a Slo to sound like shit too, but settle down, man. Your making Justin Bieber and Celine Dion seem like Canada's better exports.

I really need to stop paying attention to that idiot. He keeps getting tossed into my recommendations and sometimes I don't click away fast enough and get a load of screaming mental midget in the headphones at work.

In between Stewart Copeland playing Limp Bizkit and Mike Portnoy playing Nickleback. Fucking Drumeo. WTF? :freak:
