I had my first gig with it last night and man it was killer!!! I had forgotten how much I enjoy playing this amp.

I used the amp with the gain maxed and the drive off for my rhythm tone and kicked in the drive for leads. No boost pedals. It sounded awesome!!!

I'll definitely be using this amp live from now on, alternating between this and DSL on different shows to keep things interesting.

I’m curious what my thoughts would be again on a GH now that I have a fully developed frontal lobe. I never really bonded with any of the tones outside of going for a more stoner rock thing with it but that was a while ago lol

Yeah I didn't have a fully developed frontal lobe when I got my first one in 1994 because I could have kept it and saved a lot of money.

I'm not going for a stoner rock tone at all, more like 80s rock and it's great for that. The key with these amps is to balance the Gain with the switchable Drive. You can get a lot of different tones depending how they are set.
I'm using the Gain fully up for a 70s type crunch, without the drive on. That's about a JCM800 level of gain. Cleans up nicely with the guitar knob.

Then I have the Drive around 4 for just a bit extra gain and that's giving me a heavier rhythm tone, and I boost for leads.

So that's a pretty versatile setup for a single channel amp. It covers all my needs.

No, it's not a boost. It's just an extra gain stage so it's just an extension of the gain knob . The amp has 4 gain stages, 3 are always on and the 4th is switchable.

I run mine the same way. Gain up high, drive for a little extra juice when the time calls for it.

It is kind of fun to run the drive up high, and gain relatively low, for a more Iommi-ish sort of sound. Now the Morris has taken main stage for me, but the GH50L is an asskicking alternative. I won't even call it a "backup". It was my #1 amp for the last couple years and really kept the wolves at bay so to speak as far as keeping me from hunting down other amps.

The additional stage is implemented in quite a novel way. It's inserted in between the 1st and 2nd stage if you think of the amp being configured like a JCM800, but the order of the gain control changes.

Without the drive engaged, the gain control is after the fist stage like an 800.
With the drive engaged, the drive control is after the first stage to set signal to the drive stage, and the gain control is moved to after the drive stage.

I remember spending a long time trying to figure out what the fuck was going on with this when I was first learning to read amp schematics

Kind of weird, but it is likely effective, so that's cool.
