Using a Boss DS-1 as a lead boost.

Post by Guitarbilly »

Not the SD-1, the DS-1. What do guys think?

I used to do that when I started out, mostly because it was the only gain pedal I had. But I remember liking it.
Yesterday, I decided to dig my DS-1 out of the closet and try it again. Sounded pretty good. It gives the lead tone a smooth, liquid quality, very different from the percussive attack of the SD-1. The lower registry notes have an almost fuzz-like quality to them.
I think I'll use it on a few gigs and see if it stays on the board.

1-2 shows. One more if Billy doesn't have time to swap it out.

That's if it ever makes it to show time. I'm not certain it will. Frequency or response you don't want will potentially be the reason if I had to hazard a guess.

I've never been a fan of the DS-1 in stock form. Clipping a couple things internally made a huge difference, but it's been so long I don't remember what I clipped. Stock it just seems a bit too hairy or something. Though maybe that works for different types of music than I tend to go for. :idk:

For me, the DS-1 is too much like the Big Muff circuit wise for my tastes. It sounds alright into a distorted sound, where it kind of fuses together better, but still.

The no-solder mod is clipping & removing C12 or R17.

Dingo bingo! That's the one. Takes most of the grit out, and turns it into a tremendously powerful boost.

Friend of mine (who bought my old Recto and JVM HJS) for years ran a DS-1 into a wound up 1987x. He sounded great - I talked to him a couple months ago and asked how my old amps were doing....

He still has them but went back to the plexi/ds1 combo

I'm guessing the 1987X is running with some gain on it, then the DS-1 pushes it further with a bit of volume and gain as well?
