Woah, that is unexpected. I wonder if the speakers were partially defective and that was only noticed when pushing them harder revealed. I think celestion only has 3 years warranty (i'm guessing its well past) on their speakers but would be curious what they may say if contacted Celestion describing...

Yes and can get good tones with. You may have to tweak eq vs how would dial in with open back cab at least a drop. It still won't be fully the same especially for much heavier styles.
